1. They’re always the victim

It’s a universal truth that life throws curveballs at everyone. However, when it comes to a covert narcissist, they seem to be perpetually plagued by misfortunes. And they make sure you know it

An overt narcissist might assert their superiority blatantly but a covert narcissist plays the martyr. They’re always the victim, always wronged, always facing a crisis. It’s a subtle manipulation tactic designed to elicit sympathy and keep focus on them

2. They manipulate through guilt

Covert narcissists have a knack for twisting situations to make you feel guilty or indebted to them. This manipulation through guilt is a powerful tool they use to maintain control and get what they want

Imagine you’re planning to spend a weekend with your friends, but your partner says something like, “Sure, go have fun while I stay home alone. They’re giving you permission but their tone and choice of words instill guilt, making you reconsider your plans

3. They have a grandiose sense of self importance

Covert narcissists often harbor a deep-seated belief that they are superior to others, even if they don’t openly express it. They may not boast or brag like their overt counterparts, but their actions and attitudes often reveal an exaggerated sense of self-importance

This inflated sense of self-importance can lead them to dismiss others’ opinions, feelings or needs and expect special treatment or admiration and

So if you notice someone constantly undermining others while placing themselves on a pedestal, even subtly, you might be dealing with a covert narcissist

4. They’re hypersensitive to criticism

While we all may wince at criticism, covert narcissists take it to another level. They are hypersensitive to even the slightest suggestion of critique and take it as a personal attack. This is because any form of criticism threatens their inflated sense of self-importance

For instance, if you gently point out a mistake or suggest an improvement, a covert narcissist might react with extreme defensiveness or even hostility. They might accuse you of being unfair or twist situation to make you feel guilty for criticizing them

5. They lack empathy

One of the most defining traits of any narcissist, covert or overt, is a lack of empathy. They struggle to understand or share feelings of others. This isn’t because they can’t comprehend the concept of empathy, rather, they choose to ignore it because it doesn’t serve their self-interest

A covert narcissist may often appear uninterested or dismissive of your feelings or experiences. If you’re upset, they might downplay your feelings or make it about themselves
